K-12 Programs

Field Trip Programs

University of Arizona’s Biosphere 2 offers a variety of hands-on and immersive experiences for your students. Our programs are linked to Next Generation Science Standards with a focus on Earth systems and solutions for a sustainable future. All of our programs are available as day field trips or can be combined to create a unique overnight experience.

Laboratory Experiences

Biosphere 2’s K-12 program offerings highlight specific components of the NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS:
CORE DISCIPLINE
PRACTICES
CROSSCUTTING CONCEPTS

Students will typically have a behind-the-scenes interpretive tour and, for half-day experience, work through two of the three field/lab stations; for full-day experience, students work through all three field/lab stations.

Full Day groups of more than 24 students will be divided into two sections. In the morning, one section will participate in Lab/Field sessions, while the other section participates in a tour and hands-on lesson. The groups switch activities after lunch.

Sustainability – Issues & Solutions for Planet Earth

HUMAN IMPACT - PHYSICAL SCIENCE
USING MATH & COMPUTATIONAL THINKING
STABILITY & CHANGE; SCALE, PROPORTION, & QUANTITY

This program familiarizes students with some of the issues and concerns facing current and future generations on Biosphere 1 (our Earth), and empowers them to be part of the solutions. Students will rotate through hands-on mini projects in small groups, and go behind-the-scenes on an interpretive tour of Biosphere 2 facility.

K-4 – focus: ABC’s of Living Green – Vermiculture (Earthworms), Plastic, Green Cleaning
4-8 – focus: Plastic Palooza – Oceanography; Plastics - Macro, Meso, & Micro
9+ – focus: Eco Stations – Eco House (Rainwater Harvesting) & Environmentally Controlled Agriculture (ECA; Aquaponics, Hydroponics)

Marine Science Laboratory

PHYSICAL SCIENCE
OBTAINING, EVALUATING, & COMMUNICATING INFO
SCALE, PROPORTION, & QUANTITY; STABILITY & CHANGE

This program features hands-on interaction with marine specimens, as well as data collection and analysis in the Biosphere 2 “Wilderness” Biomes. Students will rotate through stations using Biosphere 2 Marine Science Lab and Field equipment.

K-4 – focus: Water Data Collection, Beach Biology, Microscopes
4-8 – focus: Water Data Collection, Microscopes & Plankton
9+ – focus: Water Data Collection, Plankton Discovery

Behind The Scenes Ecosystem Services Expeditions

LIFE & EARTH SCIENCE
CONSTRUCTING EXPLANATIONS
SCALE, PROPORTION, & QUANTITY; SYSTEMS & MODELS

An ecosystem service is any positive benefit that nature provides, small or large, direct or indirect, such as water purification, photosynthetic oxygen production, nutrient cycling, decomposition, and pollination. The unique engineering and novel design of Biosphere 2 helps students gain an appreciation of how and what nature and ecosystems provide. The diverse biomes under glass are only possible because of the amazing technology supporting them. Students see first-hand the challenges and opportunities of replicating what happens in nature.

K-4 – focus: Observation & Recording using Five Senses
5-8 – focus: Modeling Ecosystem Processes & Interactions
9+ – focus: Measuring & Comparing Environmental Conditions (Soil, Water, Air) in Biosphere 2

Pricing - Behind The Scenes Ecosystem Services Expeditions

Program Group Size Price
Program - 2.5 Hrs. Under 20 $360
20 - 89 $18/Person
90+ $28/Person

+$10 per person for groups over maximum.
