Our Most Popular Hands-On Science Experiences
Our Most Popular Hands-On/Minds-On Science Experiences:
Biosphere 2’s K-12 program offerings highlight specific components of the NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS – CORE DISCIPLINE PRACTICES CROSSCUTTING CONCEPTS (www.nextgenscience.org)
Half Day, $27 per person if 20 participants or more, $540 for 19 participants or less, approx. 4.5 hours. Full Day, $34 per person if 20 participants or more, $680 for 19 participants or less, 6+ hours. For group sizes above 48 students, additional charge of $10 per person (including chaperones) applies to cover additional activity stations. Maximum group size is 75 students, but please inquire about how to best accommodate your group.
Chaperone/Teacher to student ratio, for Biosphere 2 programs, is at least 1:10 and no more than 1:6.
Wilderness & Marine Science Exploration
PHYSICAL SCIENCE OBTAINING, EVALUATING, & COMMUNICATING INFO SCALE, PROPORTION, & QUANTITY; STABILITY & CHANGE
This program features hands-on interaction with marine specimens, as well as data collection and analysis in the Biosphere 2 “Wilderness” Biomes. Students will rotate through stations using Biosphere 2 Marine Science Lab and Field equipment.
Students will typically have a behind-the-scenes interpretive tour and, for half-day experience, work through two of the three field/lab stations; for full-day experience, students work through all three field/lab stations.
Full Day groups of more than 24 students will be divided into two sections. In the morning, one section will participate in Lab/Field sessions, while the other section participates in a tour and hands-on lesson (Engineering Mighty Marine Microorganisms for 1st- 5th grade, Planet Water for 6th grade and above). The groups switch activities after lunch.
- K-4 – focus: Water Data Collection, Beach Biology, Microscopes
- 4-8 – focus: Soil & Water Data Collection, Microscopes & Plankton
- 9+ – focus: Soil & Water Data Collection, Plankton Discovery
Sustaining Our Biosphere – Issues & Solutions for Planet Earth
HUMAN IMPACT - PHYSICAL SCIENCE USING MATH & COMPUTATIONAL THINKING STABILITY & CHANGE; SCALE, PROPORTION, & QUANTITY
This program familiarizes students with some of the issues and concerns facing current and future generations on Biosphere 1 (our Earth), and empowers them to be part of the solutions. Students will rotate through hands-on mini projects in small groups, and go behind-the-scenes on an interpretive tour of Biosphere 2 facility.
- K-4 – focus: ABC’s of Living Green – Vermiculture (Earthworms), Plastic, Green Cleaning
- 4-8 – focus: Plastic Palooza – Oceanography; Plastics - Macro, Meso, & Micro
- 9+ – focus: Eco Stations – Eco House (Rainwater Harvesting) & Environmentally Controlled Agriculture (ECA; Aquaponics, Hydroponics)
