Student Environmental Leadership
2016 Global Environmental Leadership and Sustainability Program
The University of Arizona Biosphere 2 and the University of California, San Diego Academic Connections together announce an exciting summer opportunity for high school students!
The Global Environmental Leadership and Sustainability program is an intensive, week-long course that will examine the diverse biomes and climate zones of the unique and iconic Biosphere 2 research facility as well as the surrounding Sonoran Desert. This year's course will be held June 19-26, 2016 at Biosphere 2. APPLY TODAY!
This course involves students in hands-on, "under-the-glass" research (and some field work) on key climate change research topics being undertaken by Biosphere 2 scientists, including water, energy, soils, volatile organic compounds, marine viruses, urban heat island effect, and others. Students enrolled in the course will come to appreciate and learn how to take the lead in sustaining our planet environmentally, be it as future scientists, environmental educators, or simply concerned, informed and action-oriented citizens. Students will learn about current thinking in climate change research, and how to apply what they learn towards future leadership roles in sustainability by continuing their education in science to achieve that goal.
Students keep journals of the week's activities and will give a presentation on what they learn, including how to apply that knowledge towards being "A Leader in Caring for the Earth".
It has never been more important to spark the imagination of students – to prepare them for a world of the future. Innovations have never moved faster from the scientist's field site to our fingertips – innovations which will change the way we live, the way we work, and the way we communicate. Young people, more than ever, need to learn how to become competent stewards of the Earth and need to be prepared to take full advantage of new opportunities. UCSD and the University of Arizona are committed to helping all students eliminate barriers to learning and to providing such opportunities. We invite you to join us on this incredible journey and to be part of our vibrant community.
The accommodations are beautiful. The casita you will be staying in is a rustic, Santa Fe-style house. Each casita has from three to five bedrooms. The bedrooms share a central kitchen (although all meals are catered) and living room, but the bedrooms provide complete privacy. In some cases there are shared bathrooms (suite-style). The rooms are oversized and feature high-speed, wireless Internet access (feel free to bring your laptop!) and central air conditioning. Please remember to bring toiletries and any appliances you need or use on a daily basis. Bedding, a set of towels, shampoo, soap, and lotion are all provided. Additional blankets and an extra pillow are available in the closet, along with an iron and ironing board. At night, the casita village is well lit, but the surrounding property can be quite dark. There is a flashlight in each bedroom. Come prepared for encounters with native wildlife common to the area.
