Student Science Academy
“It was the best experience of my life."
Biosphere 2 is pleased to announce the Summer 2016 Science Academy, a unique educational experience unlike anything else in the world. Middle and high school students interested in earth and ecosystem sciences, collaboration, and leadership development are invited to spend a week at the iconic Biosphere 2 research facility. Come join the cutting-edge science community at the University of Arizona for a world-class educational adventure!
“Best time. Awesome time. Daniel wishes it had been even longer. Life-changing experience for him.”
Student participants will learn and practice science 'under-the-glass', participating in hands-on research projects in the Biosphere 2 biomes: tropical rainforest, savanna, ocean, mangrove marsh, and coastal fog desert. Participants will apply scientific skills to conduct experiments and collect data while working side-by-side with Biosphere 2 researchers. The week will culminate with presentations of research findings. All instruction and activities are conducted in English.
“My child was immediately planning for next year's camp the day camp ended!!”
Biosphere 2's foothill setting and accommodations are unparalleled; the on-site casita village is composed of 28 rustic, Santa Fe-style houses. Each casita has multiple, private bedrooms that share a central living room and large kitchen (although all meals and snacks are provided in a central location for the Summer 2016 Biosphere 2 Science Academy). Bathrooms are generally shared (suite-style) among a couple of bedrooms. The oversized rooms feature high-speed, wireless Internet access and central air conditioning. Please remember to bring toiletries and any appliances you need or use on a daily basis. Bedding, a set of towels, shampoo, soap, and lotion are all provided. Additional blankets and an extra pillow are available in the closets. At night, the casita village is well lit, but the surrounding property can be quite dark. There is a flashlight in each bedroom, but we suggest you bring your own flashlight or headlamp as well. Come prepared for occasional encounters with native wildlife common to the area.
The week-long program will include one day on the University of Arizona main campus (specific destinations still to be determined) and time developing teamwork and leadership skills at a desert ropes course.
The ratio of researchers/counselors to students is approximately 1:8. The Academy staff also includes UA Haury Outreach Scholars who will chaperone the casitas. The Outreach Scholars are college undergraduate and graduate students drawn from the University of Arizona.

Arizona Public School Tax Credit: Looking for a more affordable way to send a student from an Arizona public school to the Biosphere 2 Science Academy? Consider asking your school to solicit tax credits and help pay for students that want to join the academy. More information available on the AZDOR website.
Note that the cost to Biosphere 2 for providing the Science Academy experience is more than $2,250 per student. Through donations, grants, and support from the University of Arizona, we are effectively offering financial assistance to each and every middle and high school student applicant. If you would like to make a donation to Biosphere 2 to support this program please contact Kevin Bonine, Biosphere 2 Director of Education and Outreach.
