Experience Biosphere 2

Biosphere 2 Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) Tour

Take advantage of this rare and special opportunity to explore the world’s largest controlled research facility focused on understanding how our planet works. Starting in November 2017, one tour takes place the 3rd Saturday of each month through May 2018. Please refer to the descriptions below for dates and times.

Biosphere 2 Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) Tour

Join a Biosphere 2 scientist for a behind-the-scenes-tour of our flagship Earth Science project. On this unique guided visit, guests will have an up-close look at the inner workings of the multi-million dollar Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) experiment. Your group can experience the LEO science project through the eyes and mind of a LEO scientist to get an in-depth introduction to this massive scale eco-hydrology and soil evolution experiment.

On the LEO Tour you will:
  • Hear about the many research uses of the enclosed LEO space over the past 25 years.
  • See the former Intensive Agriculture Biome and site of a carbon tree-physiology experiment.
  • Understand why control and scale are important for LEO and other Biosphere 2 science.
  • Learn about the engineering, design, construction, and instrumentation of the LEO experiment.
  • See the large hillslope research landscapes from above and below.
  • Tour the Stable Isotope Lab and learn how we use isotopes in LEO to track water as it moves through our study landscapes.
  • Use LEO sensors to learn how they (1,800 buried in each of three giant hillslopes!) measure CO2, Soil Moisture, Photosynthetic Active Radiation, etc.
  • Understand how electricity can be a useful tool in hydrology research (mini-LEO demonstration).
  • Learn about the value, and challenges, of an experiment at such a large scale.
  • Hear stories from the scientists themselves.
